I remember growing up watching the Price is Right. One of my favorite games they played was Cliff Hanger. The concept is simple, you have to guess the price of 3 items, for every dollar missed a little man would climb a mountain 1 step. The climber had 25 steps before falling off the cliff. If he fell off you lose.
I’ve seen people be so accurate the climber would only go up 5 or 6 steps, others so inaccurate the climber would fall off on the first item, and some would be lucky to have the climber stop on the 25th step. But nothing is more agonizing than just missing it like Kristy in the below video.
I know in life I feel like Kristy. For some reason I am always just missing it. I can come to a traffic light that turns red 2 seconds before I am able to get thru. I can walk up to a counter to pay for something 5 seconds after someone else gets in line and they end up taking 5 minutes. I can have 3 Jacks while playing poker and someone else would have 3 Queens. I can see an attractive girl across the room and as I make my way over to talk to her she leaves. That is my reality, and it happens over and over and over, all the time. It’s where I got my nickname, PoorGabe
Things rarely come easy to me. I am blessed for sure and I fully recognize it, but part of the blessing is in my perseverance. I still drive hoping to make green lights, I still try to find the shortest and quickest line, I still play poker with the guys, I still try to talk to the attractive girl at the next event. I continue on because every once in a while I make all green lights, someone lets me in front of them in the check out line, I have a string of good hands and win. When those days of good fortune come along I appreciate them all the more. And though the girl thing has yet to happen I am hopeful because as in other areas of my life every once in a while that climber stops on step 25 and I win.
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
