As is the usual custom, or rather what should be, Thanksgiving is a time we think about the things we are thankful. While I can sit here and write a list of things I am thankful for I would rather focus on the fact that I am thankful that I can be thankful. What I mean by that is I don’t just have occasional things in my life for which I can be grateful but I have many daily things in my life that I am grateful for, and for that I am grateful. I am grateful that every day I have something to be grateful for.
I have wondered how society would be if a good portion of us lived in that mindset. That mindset brings in humility which in turns beds down some our selfish behaviors. That in turn brings a good rapport with those we meet throughout the day and that brings others into considering being thankful. Now, I am not a utopianist and I understand that some people are just jerks but their behavior should not keep us from choosing for ourselves to live in that grateful humility. From my experience choosing to live a grateful life has more lasting benefits than one that isn’t grateful.
As we approach the season of giving let us see if we can truly live in that season. Let us be grateful that we have our daily needs met. Let us remember that though life can be hectic with all of those peripheral – and mostly unnecessary – things that keep us busy we have the opportunity to do them. There are many across the globe that do not have the ability to be thankful they can be thankful – they are just thankful, and in some cases yearn to just be thankful.
Be thankful, be grateful, live in humility knowing we are blessed to have the opportunities that we do. There are many who would be thankful to just have their daily needs met. We have that and so much more. And for that let us be thankful that we can be thankful.
