Moving from What if to What now

Last Friday morning while heading to work I was trying to make a decision – do I turn right, go to work and eat my bagel and cream cheese I have there or do I turn left and stop by Chick Fil-A for breakfast. I opted for the Chick Fil-A breakfast. From the Chick Fil-A parking lot I had two ways to get to the interstate. The route I chose netted me 3 traffic violations – failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, a red light and going 55 in a 45. Needless to say, I was not happy.

Immediately after receiving my ticket I thought to myself, “What if I had opted for the bagel and cream cheese? Or decided to get to the interstate the other way? I wouldn’t have this $350 ticket.”  But those what ifs don’t change my circumstance, I now have a $350 ticket.

One thing I have learned is that the “what if” game is very dangerous to play. Like uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite you can loose a sense of reality by thinking on the scenaunclerico-napoleon-dynamiterios where every decision made is the right one.  My reality is I have a ticket and the question becomes what now? Do I fight it or not?

Moving from asking what if to what now is not limited to personal decisions. It applies to all aspects and circumstances of life. When I was diagnosed with MS I could have played the what if game but I purposefully chose not to. I focused on the what now. The what now is what led me to Get to It!  And it’s the focusing on the what now that can take you from being a backwards dreamer to a forward achiever.
