I asked Lettie to share why she gets to it.
“Get to it.” This is a concept that really hit me when I was just minutes away from my 21st birthday. I had this idea of, “Just maybe, on this day, I should attempt something new I’ve never tried before.” I certainly had no interest in drinking, so I turned to my wild adventurous side. A friend of mine was giving me just enough of a push to say, “Okay, what the heck! Let’s do this!” So there I was, in my Aha Moment, strapped to a man 13,000 feet in the air. I was ready to be that little tweety bird for a just a few seconds. The thought of this being a bad idea never crossed my mind. I had nothing but good expectations for my first attempt in skydiving. My focus was on wanting to experience something that could give me a better understanding of who I really am. The experience was great! Since that birthday, I have vowed each year to try something I’ve never done before. This has included: rock climbing, traveling to South America, going on my first mission trip, singing in France and England, a helicopter ride, bungee jumping, zorbing, salsa and swing dancing, traveling through the Alps, hiking the Inca Trail, swimming with sharks and many more adventures.
All of these adventures began as a goal toward a yearly tradition. As I have grown older, planning my next adventure for that year has expanded to more that just that one big moment, but several big and small moments. I have also realized how precious life truly is. I have seen too many people fall into a schedule that limits their potential. The potential to use the God given talents they have, and explore the world by putting those talents to use. If a goal isn’t set, it’s too easy to settle with the response, “Well, I just can’t right now.” The past two years have challenged me to choose the opposite response, “Well, I certainly can!” As a result I was able to: hike the Inca Trail arriving in Machu Picchu, visit the Galápagos Islands while touring through Ecuador and currently going through the process of joining a mission team to Nepal. I see these as my world “Get to it,” moments. However this does not neglect the other moments that bring me just as much joy here locally. This includes volunteering with the elderly, partnering monthly with a homeless ministry in sharing my singing abilities, or as simple as a phone call to reaching those around me that just need someone to talk with. These are just adventurous and memorable moments for me.
After hearing all of this, I’m sure you have questions: How is this financially possible? How do you get the time off work? How do you maintain your other responsibilities? I don’t know where to look for volunteering locally? Who really needs my help? To those I answer, the perfect opportunity is there in your grasp. It’s not always going to be a pretty little package placed in your lap. You have to want it. You have to be willing to step into the mentality that this idea, which first came as a thought, can be made into a reality with action. Again it can be a big trip or something around you that you’ve happened to overlook. Personally, I am not in a money making job; just an administrative assistant with less vacation time than the average job. Despite these limitations, I am trying to take advantage of my life one day at a time, to live in the now, and to “Get to it, already!” The reason I’m able to go on these adventures is because my eyes are open for the opportunities and I take a chance. My adventures are not ones I have planned by myself, they are shared with family and friends. So my “Get To It” mentality is only rewarding if I can share it with others. The memories made motivate me to see who can join in on my next adventure. So what will you do and who will you invite?
