I went running with a friend the other day. Both of us are trying to get back into it after a winter of not running. We have our distances we are trying to reach. While discussing that it was brought up that sometimes it’s better to focus on the process than the results.
I work for an architectural firm. If you’ve ever seen a set of floor plans they can appear to be a jumbled mess of walls, doors, windows, dimensions, section markers, room names and numbers, details, etc. When drawing a set of plans it can be a daunting task if you look at what all you have to do. To keep from being overwhelmed I focus on specific tasks – drawing the walls first, then adding doors, windows, dimensions, etc. I focus on each individual item needed and it is only at the end do I look at the plan in its entirety – the result of individual processes.
Whether it is running, drawing a set of plans, painting a picture, learning a new instrument or language, the desired result may seem to be unattainable. However, broken down into smaller parts a seemingly overwhelming goal can be accomplished. What large goals do you have? What do you want to accomplish in your life that seems too big? Break it down into smaller parts – focus on the process rather than the result.
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
