I was headed to work the other morning when a driver in front of me couldn’t make up her mind. She was going to turn but wouldn’t get over in the turn lane. Instead, she rode half in the turn lane and half in my lane. Eventually she turned but only after riding for a half mile in both lanes.
Her indecisiveness got me thinking about how we are becoming a more indecisive society. We aren’t willing to commit to anything. Part of it is our belief the grass is greener on the other side while another part is the fear of being labeled “closed minded.” So, instead of enjoying what’s in front of us, instead of taking the good and bad and making the best of it, we waffle. We don’t want to do something, go somewhere, trying something for fear of missing out on something “better.” Or worse yet we let others dictate what we do or don’t do for fear of their disapproval. Whether it’s through fear of disapproval or fear of missing out we constantly miss out on good things.
How does one overcome those fears? It’s both as simple and as hard as ignoring those fears and doing it anyway. If I want to learn Spanish I can’t waffle, I have to stick to it. If I want to learn how to cook it’s the same, I have to stick to it. If I want to learn how to handspin yarn, stamp collect, dance, play rugby, shot a gun – if I want to do anything I have to ignore those outside and stick to it.
Being indecisive because we’re afraid simply means we will never do anything, or at least anything well. If you want to learn French then learn it, don’t worry about others who may think it’s a sissy language. If you want to learn to do dance then learn it, don’t worry about if you may be better at something else. Decide and stick to it. You will never become a better you if you always waffle. It’s time we make a decision and support our decision. Decide on a better you!
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
