When I was in college I had a calculus teacher who stated he was the only math teacher he knew of that also had a degree in philosophy. This got me thinking – what exactly makes us unique individuals?
As I have pondered that question over the years I noticed that no matter what path you choose there is always someone else choosing the same path. And no matter what circumstance you find yourself in, be it of your own choice or not, someone else is in the same circumstance.
So where does uniqueness come from? It is the cumulative of our choices to do something. I am not the only one who has painted a picture, played the trumpet, ran a half marathon and three mud runs, trekked to the base camp of Annapurna, sat on an executive committee, worked on the Harry Potter expansion in Orlando, been in a bachelor auction, or been diagnosed with MS. However, cumulatively I am the only person who has done all of those things and more. The sum of my experiences and doings sets me apart. And the more I do the more unique I truly become.
What about you, what’s your uniqueness? What kinds of things have you done or tried? If you have not done much let me encourage you to do and if you have done, do more! The more you do the more unique you become – being truly one of a kind.
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
