Baby Steps

There’s a great movie from the early 90s titled What About Bob? Bob is a nut whose mental problems stem from the belief that he has them, when in reality he doesn’t. He changes his doctor who prescribes a baby-step approach to overcoming his problems. Here is their first meeting.

As I watched this clip I couldn’t help but think of approaching goals in the same manner. As I mentioned in my blog Slow and Steady, Fast and Ready, some of us have no problem getting to our goals but a lot of us do. Take for instance my recent goal of deep cleaning my house. It normally takes me a week to clean from top to bottom. This time around it’s been going a lot slower and will eventually take over two weeks to clean it. But even in slow baby steps I’m still pressing toward the goal.

Sometimes, whether we like it or not, we have to pace ourselves. Like Bob, we need to cut the goals into smaller ones and baby step our way. “Baby steps to walking 1/4 mile. Baby steps to running 1/2 mile. Baby steps to walking a 5k.” It may sound silly and childish but I would rather baby step my way to finishing a goal than to never have completed it for fear of what others may think. What goal(s) do you have for yourself that might require baby steps? Why not start today, you gotta start somewhere.

Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
