“There’s nothing to do.” Too many times I’ve heard this from others, even from myself. It’s a very common statement and also one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves every day. Regardless of how many times we say it or with how much conviction we have when we do, there is always something to do.
When we think of things to do most of us think in terms of doing something physical, something that requires action. Activities such as dancing, hiking, skiing, running, exercising, etc. However, something to do, passions to pursue come in a variety of packages. You could learn another language, learn to cook, read or write poetry, philosophy or fiction. You can collect stamps, study the different types of flowers or trees, learn to paint or even make a house of cards. Not all activities require great physical exertion.
While thinking of things to do you should also expand your search. There are a wide variety of passions out there and they are all different in what they offer. Some are more individual and some are more group oriented, some require skill while others require simply trying. Some develop personal skills while others are about developing others’ personal skills. Always be prepared to try something new, something out of the ordinary, something you never expected to try. In the end, it just might be that unexpected thing that changes your life.
The reason we always use that phrase, “There’s nothing to do.” is that we simply don’t want to actively pursue anything. Unfortunately we have grown accustomed to having activities and passions brought to our door step. But life doesn’t work like that, passions are always on the move, they are always in motion. They do wave at us, call us, beckon us to join. It’s simply realizing that there is something to do, we just have to take the initiative to join those passions already at work.
So let us stop using that phrase and start getting to our life, our passions. We need to stop lying to ourselves and just get out there and do it. Regardless of our insistence otherwise, there is always something to do. It’s simply up to us to find and pursue it.
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
