I was told that Michaelangelo once said of his David, “He was always in there, I just chiseled away the excess stone.” In my research I couldn’t find that particular quote but I did find this one, “The idea is there, locked inside, and all you have to do is remove the excess stone.” While the first quote is nice I actually like the second one better.
I believe that within us resides passions and goals just waiting to be discovered and fulfilled. I know there are cases of apathy, even apathy to a high level. However, I am convinced that until this world passes away no one will ever be 100%, unequivocally, unabashedly apathetic. I believe that as long as we live and breathe there resides in us a desire to be better, to find and fulfill our desires, passions and goals.
So the question is not if you have a passion but what is it? Perhaps you secretly had a desire to travel. Or maybe you didn’t know you liked cooking as much as you do. Even still you can have a desire buried deep down, a desire you never show anyone – a buried desire for art, or music, or languages, or dancing. Life is about finding, defining and pursuing those passions. As Michaelangelo said, “The idea (passion) is there, locked inside, all you have to do is remove the excess stone.”
