Pomegranate or Passion Fruit

In Greek mythology Hades, god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the harvest goddess. Hades kidnapped Persephone and took her to the underworld. Demeter mourned her lost daughter and neglected her duties causing plants to stop growing. Zeus finally intervened and made Hades relinquish Persephone. However, Hades, knowing that anyone who ate food of the underworld would be made to stay there, gave Persephone some seeds of the pomegranate, which she ate. The result was Persephone having to live in the underworld 3-6 months each year, one for each seed eaten. Thus explaining winter and no harvest.

For the passion fruit, however, I can find no mythology regarding it – it is simply a mildly sweet fruit with a bitter skin. It is used a lot in desserts and blended with other fruit juices. There are no stories of its use to trick and in cases of passion gone awry. It is just a pure piece of food that is delicious and nutritious.

Sometimes a passion for something can cause things to go awry. Hades had a passion for Persephone that caused him to move beyond love and to something more sinister. The story of Hades is not unique, our lives also tell the tales of passions gone badly. One may have a passion for running marathons but may over train causing early joint problems. One may immerse too far into painting to the point they never go outside. One may pursue outdoors thing such as hiking and camping they neglect their family and job. A passion can easily turn into an obsession if not checked.

When I talk about finding your passion I am referring to the passion fruits of life, those things that are pure and good for enjoyment and nutrition. Avoid the pomegranates of life that are used in ill-gotten gain and over indulgent pleasures. Be passionate for life, enjoy and pursue it, but always make your passion a passion fruit, never a pomegranate.

Attempt it. Chance it. Try it. Get to It!
