Or do we? Is time management about allocating time or is it something else? Could proper time management be more about choice than creating a schedule? Let’s explore.

The Allusion of Time Management

There never seem to be enough hours in the day. No matter what we do we can never seem to get ahead with what we are doing. It always takes tomorrow to get things accomplished. Whether learning to play Spanish guitar, painting a landscape, learning a new language, or mountain biking we all need more time. And no matter how much we try to figure out how to make more time it never seems to happen. It begins to feel more like an illusionist’s trick than anything else.

So we start trying to figure out time management, trying to get a hold of that illusion. We take time management courses where we are told to start allocating our time. We are supposed to keep track of how many hours a day we spend going to work, eating, sleeping, cleaning, watching tv or going to the movies, etc. From that we set a schedule allocating so many hours for this activity and so many hours for that activity. It is as though time is the enemy, the illusionist, and we are figuring out a way to beat it, a way to figure out the trick.

Time Management is Prioritizing

Time exists, it’s here, we participate in it and it participates with us, it is not an illusion. So, if time isn’t an illusion is the management of it still an illusion?  Time management, I propose, isn’t so much an illusion as it is a concept we errantly attribute to time itself – days, hours, minutes and seconds. The concept of time. We think if we control the amount of “time,” aka days, hours or minutes, we spend on a task then we have managed our time. That’s still the wrong approach. Rather than looking at the calender or the clock to  determine our time management we need to look at ourselves.

Time management doesn’t start with how many hours are in a day but with what do I, or you, or we want to be. It’s about choosing if you want to be a person of business, or an artist, or a musician, or an actor, or what have you. Do you want to be a person in front or a person in the background? Perhaps you want to be kind, or confident, or stoic, perhaps outrageous, courageous or enigmatic. Choosing who you want to be is the first step in time management.

Knowing who we want to be helps us to learn those steps to take to be that person. If you want to be kind there are steps you take to be kind, if you want to be a person of business there are steps to take to accomplish that. Each side of the person you want to be has its own steps. Each of those sides takes time to develop, and that is what time management really is. It is prioritizing who you want to be and taking the steps, and time, to achieve that.

Spanish Guitar Time Management

I enjoy playing the guitar and learning Spanish guitar has been enjoyable. It helps me express myself. Yet, while I have enjoyed learning and playing I know that being an elite guitarist isn’t one of my dreams, it’s not who I want to be. I want to be able to play, yes, but it’s not something I want on a professional level. In prioritizing my own life I am learning to better manage my time. It is those areas of my life that I want to happen most that I am focusing more time on, and thus time management begins.

No Formula

There is no formula to time management, it is merely figuring out what matters most. Time itself is not the enemy, time is just time. We simply need to decide what matters most in our lives, figuring out who we want to be and then pursuing it. Sometimes it’s just that simple.

Attempt it. Chance it. Try it.
