Why did I hit that wall half way through the challenge? That is a good question. There are a few variables at play. First, when it comes to changing eating habits it is easier to start with one thing, one goal. For this diet it would have been easier to go either gluten or dairy free to start rather than both at the same time. And for someone like me who impulse food buys that can make or break the diet. It is easier to be one or the other – dairy free or gluten free – than both at the same time. For instance, I can go gluten free but still eat cheeses, and that is doable. Or I can go dairy free and still eat pastas or breads without cheeses. To go free on both, however, is a lot harder.
Another reason why I hit that wall is for the primary reason of this challenge – to test if being gluten and dairy free really help with my MS symptoms. I mentioned in my last post that the weather does play a part in my symptoms and at the time it had gotten warmer. Well, it got cold again and my symptoms are back to being more aggravated. My legs feel tighter, my muscles seem weaker, all because of the cold weather. So while I preliminarily said it felt like the diet was helping I may have to change my position. And if the diet is not going to help with my MS, why continue? Why go through this struggle if it is not working?
Yet even though I really want to go back to eating what I want, even though the diet may not be helping with my MS symptoms, I am still going to finish the challenge. I started this 60 day challenge not as a 30 day challenge, but 60 days, and 60 days it will be. Yes, it may seem fruitless if my MS symptoms are not helped at all by the diet, yes, it may seem silly to continue with a diet that is hard to accomplish and is a struggle. But this challenge is like running a marathon – I have ran 13.1 miles with 13.1 more to go. While I am seeing others break off to the right to finish their half marathon I have to break left to continue running the other 13.1 miles. Just like when I broke left to run the other 13.1 miles when I ran the marathon last year, even though I did not want to, I am going to break left and finish this not 30 day but 60 day challenge.
What about you – have you ever hit a wall half way through something you were working on to complete? Have you challenged yourself only to finish only to find half way through you did not see any results or reason why to finish? It is common to all of us. Yet, when it is all said and done it is better to continue on and move forward than to stop and quit. It is hard, I know, but it is worth finishing. 30 more days – I can do this and so can you.
Attempt it. Chance it. Try it.
