As I have mentioned before I used to love the cold weather. I would run in short sleeve shirts during the winter, even occasionally in shorts. Now that I am a little older and especially with having MS, I don’t care for the cold as much. I just feel cold and my MS gets bothered by it – not much fun. So now I prefer warmer weather with Spring being my favorite season.
And Spring is coming! Today is the last day of progressively getting colder. I like that, I appreciate very much that we have past the half way point of winter. That in itself is a motivating factor for me. Much like having to do chores I don’t want to do, knowing that I am on the other side of it, having got past the half way point, can keep me going.
Staying motivated, especially in times and situations where it is low, can be a taunting task. To keep those periods from overwhelming me I break things down into smaller segments. When the winter months approach I look at how much longer until the winter solstice (shortest day of the year), then I look to the coldest day of the year (and the subsequent warming trend). After that I count down to daylight savings time change then the spring equinox. Without breaking the time into smaller pieces I would be looking at 3+ months of cold, dark days – and that can be depressing. As of now I am celebrating that last day of getting colder.
With the warming trend starting tomorrow think about those periods of low motivation and how you got through them. Perhaps you are like me and break it down into smaller, manageable periods, or perhaps you have found a different way.
