One of the more infamous interruptions is Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift receiving an MTV award. The interruption caused a backlash, some in the form of memes, as depicted above. His interruption proves that one can be interrupted at any time, anywhere for any reason. However, it’s not the interruptions that is key in those situations (though it does play large) but it’s how you react to the interruptions.
Your life will be interrupted, there’s no changing that fact. What there is is either acceptance or denial. My life has been interrupted many times over the years. What I had planned out as a senior in high school is no where close to where I am today. It’s all thanks to the many interruptions I’ve had along the way.
Inky Johnson, who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, was a University of Tennessee football player. During a routine tackle Inky’s life was interrupted with an injury that left his right arm paralyzed. (Learn more about Inky ) Not being able to play football he turned his attention to leadership training – to which he is most affective. During an interview he once said about his injury and being interrupted, “I don’t think things happen to stop us but to redirect us.” If this is true, and I think it is, I wonder how many of us listen.
My interruption of MS has definitely changed my life. It’s altered some priorities, sure, but more than that it’s pushed me toward following my dreams. Not just creating the dreams, not just dreaming them, but moving them from dreams to reality. The interruption of MS in my life has redirected me and I am starting to embrace that redirection. And it’s in the embrace, in how I react to the interruption that is key to my success or failure.
